Change topic

After couple days of thinking the previous ideas, I found that very limited sources about my topic through online. Therefore, I have make a decision of change the topic into the one that related to what my interest. 

In this stage, I have to restart again by thinking the topic, however I still doing interactive narrative website. I have use several days to brainstorming the interesting ideas. 


I have different ideas came in my mind so that I have jotted down in everywhere. I also seek for my inspiration by looking on books, pinterest and news.

In the meantime, I have also make an appointment with Chuan zui on Wednesday (2nd July) for consultation.

While researching my ideas I found an Taiwan artist who name is Ji Di. Her artwork has inspired me on the new ideas.

Her artstyle was mostly dreamy and portrayed in fantasy genre. However , it inspire on my idea which the story is about a "Dream Thief".

Therefore, this is a good topic that lead me the direction on building fantasy story which is what I always found myself more enthusiasm on doing it.

I use about one to two days to brainstorming the story and finally I got my storyline. 

Dream thief story outline :

A character (name probably Mr.Dream) is a negative person. He couldn't have a nice dream at all. Therefore he feel jealous on other people who always have a nice dream. He wants to make other people same as him as always having bad dream. His evil thought that lead him to enter in other people's dream, stole their good dream and left the bad dream . So everytime he enter people's dream, he sabotage the dream, make it into the worse. Until a day, he met a character. He enter the people dream as usual, he try to destroy his dream but he failed. He started to feel interested about this character, so that he try to follow him and observed him everynight. At the end, he realized that character always having a positive mind that although he is in the worse scenario but he facing it happily.

First Consultation

A first consultation with Chuan Zui and Kelvin today.

I have proposed the overall ideas for my supervisors. However, below were their feedbacks.

-The message of balancing usage of tablet and physical toy have to be strong, it might be an advice for kids that do not obsess with digital device.

-Therefore Zui has showed me one of the example in creative sandbox that has nice concept and impactful for the user.




This is an interactive ad that produced by Peugeot not only to produce safe cars but their aim is to educate their consumer about responsible driving. This ad has simulates the dangers of texting while consumer are driving.

-From the example above, Zui was suggested that my story could let user to involve in the event by using user perspective to view the story. For example:Playing with Ipad while having dinner with family but when finished playing the game his family has gone.

-For technical part, for my final project that inspire by doing pop out windows from ramaya.na, however, from Kelvin feedback, there must be a clear and strong reason that doing the pop out window, because the original idea of ramayana doing pop out window was to promote the google features. 

-Therefore, the overall feedback was to rethink the big idea that related to my interactive narrative website. 

After consultation, I have research some website that using user point of view to navigate the story. 
One of the website that I found such as Rome an interactive film.



In this website, the film will keep playing and go forward, user might want to explore the environment by just moving all around to view the perspective in the world.

However, this website that could give me some of the inspiration and ideas for my final project.

In this stage, I have also consulted with Sweii. She has clear out the way and direct me to the correct path. 

The reason that my idea is not strong is because of the unclear target audience. In my statement of intent, I have noted that I was targeted on two groups which are kids and parents. However, the target audience should be more specific. Different target audience has different narrative approach. For instance, if my final project is targeted on parent, I should understand the target audience behavior and what is their mindset. To be more specific, to target on parent who were working and surfing internet all the time so that my website that having more possibility to educate them by advice them the balance usage of playing Ipad to their children.

Therefore, the next step is to seek out and understand what target audience thinking. I have to further investigation on user behavior by doing some survey and more in-depth research that helps to strengthen my story and idea. I also have to think a way to appropriate the topic with the interactivity in the website.

Statement of Intent


Topic 

In nowadays, the speed of technology has moving faster. The development of new technology has provided a better result of mankind evolution. Technology has become more convenient that helps in saves time and solving any issues faster. However, the usage of technological devices such as mobile phones, tablets or other gadgets that has gain more popularity in almost every generation. Even kids or toddles are having touchscreen devices in front of them. By using the touchscreen device, users are allowed to download several of application such as educational apps, games and so on. 

Therefore, touchscreen device has raise up the issue of causing addiction on kids. Kids are taking their touchscreen device with them wherever they go. They are playing it almost all of the times or even in front of the dinning tablet. From that, parents tend to be proud of given that the access to technology is a right and the superior tool for both entertainment and learning to their kids. Touchscreen devices has describe as a “pacifier” for parent, to keep their kids calm they hand in their device such as IPhone or IPad to their kids and giving them some extra times to do something else. 

Besides, technological devices may cause harmful impact or positive on kids. Touchscreen devices apps have provided educational applications, which allow kids to learn in faster pace, however, kid may be downloading some harmful apps that parent might think are innocent. Technology that provides greater opportunities in any field, in fact the negative side of the issues is being overweighed by the positive one. 

From the issue, it inspire in my final project. The popularity of touchscreen device has cause impact on kids and it slowly overtaken the traditional toy such as building blocks, Lego and etc. The main idea of my final project is to create an interactive narrative website which based on the issues that’s happening in the society. The story will have the contrast on two kids life, one without technology and the other one with. 

As interactive narrative website is a form of digital entertainment which can be influenced user in real-time. From that, my interactive narrative website will provide some decisions making and interactivity to engage the audience into the story. In the interactivity, narrative will be showing in different pop out boxes everywhere unlikes the static interactive narrative website that only stick into one windows. The ideas is to give a new ways to approach and deliver the message to the audience so that they are more exciting on the artefact by using just simple mouse interaction. This project that challenge myself on producing an artwork that the integration of interactivity and narrative components. Therefore, I will be research on more programming codes and the best way of producing narrative story with interactivity.
Genre

This project is an interactive narrative website with a theme of fantasy, adventure and mystery. It is promote the social awareness of both positive and negative impact on touchscreen device in kids. The­refore, this project is embedded in entertaining methods.

Form

The interactive narrative website with using mouse interaction on desktop screen. This project will be using Adobe Dreamweaver on programming codes on interactivity. By using the core technology markup language HTML5, some of the Jquery plug in open source software for making easier navigation and create some of the animations in the narrative content and some of the functional codes in Javascript. Narrative content will mostly deliver by using illustration or simple and shorts animation approach. Illustration will draw by using Adobe Photoshop. For this project, the audio integrating with both content and interactivity. Some of the sound effects will be play as a feedback to enhance user experience.

Target Audience

This project are mostly targeted on general with the age range of 10 an above. Basically, this project can be targeted on different specific groups such as kids, teenagers, adults or parents. From that, different categories of generation will be achieved different message and experience. For the young generation, they will realize the warm of playing with physical toys and how technology has change in nowadays. For elder generation such as parent, they will have more vigilance on the usage of touchscreen device to their children. Therefore, the target market would mostly be urban area, which must with a suitable occasion.

Related Skills & Knowledge

Throughout the two years of studying in this course. I have learnt some of the basic skills for develop a static website. However, I have also learnt some of the more advance programming codes such as Javascript, Jquery and CSS to create an interactive website with UI and UX. Other than that, some of the knowledge and updated news that I have learned with experienced teachers and probably will help me on problem solving. Other than that, for the illustration skills, I have taking a course of digital painting in the past; it is able to help me to achieve some of the effects and increase my drawing skills. Therefore, with the set of skills that I would like to push myself more further on develop a more advance of interactive narrative website. As I am more specialize in building website and it will lead to my future career, hence I would like to raising my skills with the same quality and standard in the industry. 

New Skills & Knowledge

There are plenty of new skills and new knowledge that I would like to learn in the future and will be listed in below: 

· To discover and improve on the skills of HTML 5, Javascript, CSS and Jquery. 

· To acknowledge myself on how to create a more engaging narrative. 

· To achieve the effects that I want to do, such as the effect on user interface and on how to do the pop out windows. 

· Will research on how interactivity that helps in delivering narrative. 

· To plan on the interactivity, which component is suitable for giving interaction to the user. 

· To consider the file size so that website will not be overload.

Degree essay relation 

A degree essay topic “The development of technological gadgets that affected and neglected on social in young generation”. This question will somehow carries on and relate to some part of my final project. It can be share some of the academic findings while in the research processes, however, the final essay has require more substantial research materials.

Review on SOI draft

After consult with Sweii on SOIT draft. She suggested that my target audience should scope into some specific group and a clear message that my narrative should brings. 

Due to the limited sources that I found in online, I will scope down my target audience in the age range of 10 an above and urban areas. Basically, my interactive narrative website is targeted on general. 

From previous, I kind of lost in the direction of what message should i convey for my target audience through my story.Touchscreen device that has both negative and positive impact. However, I have done some research to make the topic of my final project more solid. 

Some of the research shows that the negative is overweight than the positive impact. Some of the application that available to download to the touchscreen device is endanger to children.

From that, it come out the inspiration of my narrative by having a contrast on a kid with technology around her/him and a kid that without technology. The main message is to show that the warm of having physical toy such as teddy bear, building blocks that could bring more happiness and memories to the kids unlike the other side, technology should be use in more responsibility way.
